Is Wimax All It's Cracked Up To Be?

Technology seems to be moving at a rapid pace

, so why is it hard to find something that's truly revolutionary? All too often products claim to offer you all sorts of benefits, but in the end their features either turn out to be disappointing or the product itself turns out to be too expensive. Luckily, Wimax internet is neither of those. It really has the potential to revolutionize the way you use the internet, and it's more affordable than you may think.

In order to understand why it's so revolutionary, you have to understand what makes it tick. Wimax is a wireless, cellular broadband internet connection. It is essentially the next generation of cell phone service, but it was designed from the very beginning to be a high speed internet connection. Because it is the next generation of a technology, it will require that a city have certain infrastructure installed before it can be made available to its residents. This means that it is currently not yet offered everywhere, though its coverage is continually expanding.

So what will you be able to do with this service? What can you do with a cell phone? You can take it pretty much anywhere in your city and use it. That's what you'd be able to do with a Wimax connection too. Subscribers usually have the option of using a USB modem or PC card to access the internet anywhere in the city-wide coverage area. That means you could take your laptop and Wimax connection to the local park, your friend's place, or your favorite restaurant and have access to a high-quality broadband connection. You could even use it in a moving vehicle. For example, you can alleviate boredom by using it during your morning or evening commute. Most people find it hard to imagine that they'd be able to take their internet with them because they're used to using it only in their rooms at home, but cellular technology makes it all possible.

An internet connection isn't much good if it can't keep up with what the internet has to offer. Just look at dial-up. It hasn't been able to keep up for some time now and it shows. You basically are forced to use the internet of 15 years ago with that service. Wimax is different though. It is a speedy connection by anyone's standards. It's even faster than most standard installations of cable and DSL, though a high-end cable connection probably has it beat. Nevertheless, it isn't as slow as many expect a wireless technology to be. Wireless technology has truly come of age with this internet connection. You'll be able to download large files in minutes instead of hours, upload your favorite pictures and video to social networking sites such as Facebook, video conference with friends and family, and the list goes on.

It's tempting to think that such a connection would be prohibitively expensive, but it's not. It's priced competitively with cable and DSL, and given all that it can offer over those two options, that makes it a great deal indeed.
