Is Winter Really The Worst Time To Get Fit And Healthy?
Chances are that when you think about getting fit and healthy
, the image you have in your mind is going to the gym or for a run on a morning in glorious weather, with the skies being clear blue and the sun beating down on you.
It's also likely that you imagine sitting outside on the patio eating your grilled chicken and salad whilst sipping a refreshing diet tonic and lemon with plenty of ice.
And whilst there's no doubt that this can happen, what do you do when the winter comes around?
It's dark by 5.00pm, the temperature very rarely tops 8 degrees centigrade from November through to February - even at midday - and you can want to do nothing than hibernate in your home by the blazing fire with a box of chocolates and a glass of wine.
For most, winter seems to be by far and large the worst time of year to get fit and healthy.
How true is this, though?
Yes, the conditions may not be ideal, but is it really such a struggle to eat healthily and stay fit during winter?
Simply put, no, it's not that difficult - and it can actually be the better time of the year to lose weight.
Let's start by looking at gym memberships.
People naturally want to get fit and healthy for the summer and so you don't often see massive discounts on gym memberships from May through to September, as people are likely to want to go to the gym anyway, without needing to be tempted.
In the winter, however, when people are less likely to go, there are various offers on and it's not uncommon for you to be able to pick up a free gym pass, meaning you can usually exercise completely for free.
You also have to think about your diet, too - it doesn't have to be hearty - and unhealthy - pies and boxes of chocolates, as long you spend sometime thinking about what you're going to eat throughout the day. This is because your meals need to be hot to keep you warm throughout the day and substantial enough to mean you don't snack on unhealthy items, yet they need to remain nutritious and healthy.
And the perfect answer for many is soups.
Made by you doing nothing but placing some vegetables into a pan with a stock cube and water, just let it to boil away for around 20 to 30 minutes until the vegetables are soft and then use a blender to puree it to your desired consistency.
It might not be something that's suitable for every meal, but if you could make a batch of soup at the weekend and freeze it, it could cover your lunch for the coming week.
Getting fit and healthy isn't something that comes easily to many and it can seem almost impossible during the winter months. However, if you take the time to look at what you're doing and don't assume the winter is a difficult time to lose weight, you should be able to continue your weight loss regime right throughout the year.
