Is Wu Yi Tea Just Another Fad?

Have I been drinking the wrong tea? I began drinking green tea a while ago

, but I just found out I may not be in the loop with the most beneficial tea. Is wu yi tea better than green tea or just another fad?

One could hardly call wu yi tea a fad given its extensive use in Asian culture for centuries. Much like green tea, wu yi tea has been used medicinally and for pure enjoyment and tradition in China and elsewhere for thousands of years.

In the West, green tea became popular when science discovered all of its amazing health benefits. It contains massive amounts of phytochemicals. These protect the plant from free radical damage and disease.

We gain those benefits to protect our bodies when we drink tea. Green tea and wu yi tea can slow aging and prevent disease. The special phytochemicals in tea called catechins can also help burn fat.

This is especially effective when people drink tea throughout the day and exercise regularly. The tea helps you burn fat for a longer time after exercise is complete.

Unfortunately, green tea has a rather grassy, bitter taste that differs quite a bit from the more popular black tea. Most people in Western culture are far more familiar with black tea. This is where wu yi tea may shine in comparison.

There are four varieties of real tea (Camellia sinensis): black, oolong, green and white tea. White tea is the most rare because it is only picked a few times a year when before the leaf buds fully open. Green tea is dried and rolled, but then it is steamed to stop the oxidation process. It has a rather grassy flavor, but the lack of oxidation preserves the nutrients.

Black tea goes through a similar process, but it is not steamed and then it's fully oxidized. Oolong tea is partially oxidized, so it's in the middle in terms of flavor and nutrients between black and green tea. It has a smooth flavor and aroma like the more familiar black tea, but it has more nutrients than black tea.

The climate where Wu Yi tea is grown is perfect for producing excellent tea. Wu yi tea is actually oolong tea, but it's named for the Wu Yi Mountain chain where it is grown. It was once only given as gifts to higher ups in Chinese culture. It finally became popular in Western culture, but it's still not widely available in markets. You can find plenty on the internet.

Though green tea has more nutrients, more people may enjoy the flavor of wu yi tea, which still has more nutrients than black tea. As well, some of the wu yi teas have also had wu yi tea extract added to the tea making it more powerful than regular green tea.
