Is Your Commute Killing You?

Many of those in todays workforce travel every day to get to their job

. For some it may be a five minute drive down the road, but for many the trip to work can be a long commute across town or even in a neighboring city.

These daily trips may not even seem like very much, especially if they are only ten to fifteen minutes long. But, thats already about half an hour each day that you spend sitting in your car in a possibly high stress situation, especially if youre running a little late.

So ask yourself: Have you found yourself spending more time in your vehicle? Is your daily commute consuming a significant portion of your day and a common excuse for ignoring your health and fitness goals? For many, their simple commute to work has become a health issue on its own, leading to health issues and inconvenience when it comes to getting out there and staying fit.

On the surface, its easy enough to spot where extended work commutes can leave people with less time to spend exercising.

Of course, those that spend enduring periods of commute, even one as short as a fifteen minute drive, will spend less time eating properly. Because time may feel short, one may find themselves eating fast food or snacks during the drive rather than sitting down and eating a quality healthy meal.

Essentially, these factors lead to increased obesity and stress related problems such as high blood pressure. In addition to health problems, there are also the resulting consequences the body experiences, such as lack of energy and the drive to seek a fitness solution.

Taking care of yourself

Your main goal is to practice the art of eating properly, even when you dont think you have enough time. Instead of pressuring yourself into eating on the go, wake up a little earlier so you can prepare a quality breakfast before you drive to work. In fact, eating before you begin a long commute will help increase alertness which is what you need when youre on the road.

What about lunchtime meals? It is unlikely youll want to commute home to enjoy a quality lunch, which is why many commuters tend to eat fast food. Instead, you may want to consider packing your lunch and taking it with you. Avoid a quick grab out of the snack machine or ignoring your need to eat and doubling up on the coffee instead, which is a favorite amongst commuters and those that travel the busy streets of town.

Youll need to start by organizing your daily schedule to make the most of the time that is already there. The problems that arise from related commuting health issues are the results of the compounding stresses of spending extra time on the road. Many people wake up and know that theyve got a longer than usual drive to work, so they decide to make that their priority for the morning and simply leave without eating or planning a healthy breakfast. At the same time, were on our way home after work, and because the drive is longer than usual, we simply focus on getting back home to relax after a long day at work and a long drive home. Thats where the major issues come into play, because the opportunities are numerous. Consider the fact that a long drive is basically a solution of its own. You have to cover more territory, and more often than not, there will be more fitness opportunities along the way, if youre looking for them.

Arranging to attend a fitness center that isnt out of the way and has a flexible and business person friendly schedule is one of the best practices that will increase the likelihood of you being able and wanting to attend. Those like the Southern California fitness center are ideal for this type of situation, and are renowned for their flexibility and ability to match the commuting workers schedule.

Also consider that there are plenty of little things you can do to help maintain your health throughout your day. Consider taking the stairs at work rather than simply riding the elevator or even stretching during your breaks. There are various practices that are simple enough to fit in any schedule and will definitely make a difference to your well-being. Basically, youll need to fit in fitness wherever you see an opportunity.

It may not seem like a lot, but a long commute can feel like it takes the momentum out of your day. Time spent on the road is regarded as time not spent staying fit. But, its important to see that even something that seems most inopportune can still provide plenty of chances to better your health.
