Have you jumped on the "social network" bandwagon yet? I've known about them for awhile, but just never got interested in spending my time exploring them. For me, time is a premium. I don't have time to be a social butterfly.
At the suggestion of my friend and colleague Bruce Hughbanks, I reluctantly joined the Twitter network. Like all of the social networking sites you have spend some time exploring their system.
Part of the exploration is setting up your profile and adding a photo of yourself. At twitter they give you the option of adding additional graphics to your personal page. Nice idea. I use that valuable piece of real estate to promote this ezine.
After I had that all setup, I decided I would look for familiar faces. I know that some of my regular clients are roosting at twitter so I figured that was a good place to start.
I did manage to find a handful of people I know. Twitter is all about following people (No, they are not stalking you.. just following your posts in the system) so I set myself up to follow the familiar faces.
After a few days of being in the system, something interesting happened. People who were also following the people I was following, started following me. This got me to thinking about how I could get people in my target market to start following me too.
The wheels were turning. I searched their system using a few keywords related to my target market. WOW! Up came hundreds of relevant results. I was excited. I continued my search with more keywords and found even more targeted results. I couldn't believe my good fortune. Here were hundreds and hundreds of people in my target market all in one place.
The question was how could I get them to know who I am and what I do? I had a theory, but I had to test it first to be sure it worked before I set things in motion. Time is a premium. I don't want to waste it doing something that's not going to get me the results I'm looking for. I started following a small number of these people to see what would happen.
My suspicions were correct. Many of the people I was following in my test group started to follow me too. That's when I knew I was on to something.
I happen to know that you have the option to be notified by email when someone decides to follow you.
Responding to the email notification is a perfect opportunity for me to introduce myself on a personal level to my target market. How cool is that?
You've only got space for 140 characters in your reply so I had to be selective about what I wanted to say. I also didn't want to appear as if I'm trying to sell them something. My goal was simply to introduce myself and tell them what I do.
I wrote up a simple "reply" that tells my new followers exactly what I want each of them to know and Whew!... it just fits into 140 spaces.
"Hi, I noticed you're following me. Nice to meet you! I'm the designer at: [http://CustomDesignGraphics.com] What can I do to help you?"
Short, sweet and to the point!
Just about everyone who received my reply went to my site and sent me back a short personal note to say hello or send a compliment.
At this point... I'm really excited... I have located hundreds of people in my target market, and every day I'm getting more and more notifications about them following me and visiting my website. Isn't that exactly what we try to do with out marketing?
I don't sell a $10, $15 or $25 dollar product. I own a service business. My average sale is much higher and most often results in repeat business. Some of my clients have been doing business with me for 10+ years. So the monetary value of each of my clients can be extremely high.
On a side note... It's not just about making money. I treasure the friendships I make in the process. There's no price you can put on making a lifetime friend. Many of my friends started out as clients first.
In the 2 weeks since I discovered how to get my target market to follow me, I've been blessed with 4 new clients and it didn't cost me one red cent. I couldn't be more thrilled.
So I'll post a notice on twitter when I add another issue to the Tip Sheet, add new items to my product line, make a new podcast, when I have something of interest to say or just to say hello.
The key is to continue posting. Some people are addicted to it. I see posts from people standing in airports, driving down the road and all sorts of places you wouldn't expect them to be while they are twittering.
Fortunately, it's not necessary to post dozens of times a day. Even as little as a couple of times a day will keep your name in front of the right people, provided you are following your target market.
For me, this is the easiest and quickest way to get myself in front of my target market, at no cost to me, within a reasonable amount of time spent.
I'm still not a social butterfly and I probably won't ever be. I don't have that type of personality. But I have managed to work part of the "social networking" system to my advantage and you can do it to.
