Is Your Tv Green Enough?
Environmentally conscious consumers are always thinking about the green credentials of their purchases
. They research big budget items like plasma and LCD TVs for much more than a price tag. Eco-conscious consumers are researching and making choices based on power consumption, materials used in the construction of TVs, and the environmental footprint of the manufacturer.
These are some aspects to consider in making a greener TV purchase:
Energy Efficiency
Extremely important to green consumers, the energy efficiency rating on a TV can be the deciding sales point. Quite rightly, consumers are turned off by electronic products which have excessive power consumption. Even if they're cheaper, they're inferior products by definition.
Ironically, the energy efficiency ratings are also a good indicator of reliability. For the price of some more efficient electronics, you can get a great product. The ultra efficient, ultra green systems are definitely the way of the future.
LCD Vs Plasma
Plasmas have a reputation as being much less efficient than LCDs. In terms of power consumption, that's true. The reason for this is that they're quite different forms of technology. Plasma TVs include active gases (typically xenon and neon) as part of their basic operating function, and the gases require extra electricity.
In green terms, that's a pity, because the extra electricity is likely to come from greenhouse gas emitting power suppliers. The extra demand for electricity therefore generates more greenhouse gases. The LCD TV is definitely the winner, unless an acceptable alternative source of energy is available.
Green Manufacturers
In the green consumer market, manufacturers with real, proven green credibility are very much preferred, and actively searched for when making purchases.
The basic criteria for identifying a green manufacturer is much the same as for a green product. A green manufacturer delivers on all of these points:
The theory of a green product is that its production, life cycle and disposal are all environmentally safe, don't endanger people or natural environments, don't generate waste, and don't produce pollutants. Preferably, products should be 100% recyclable.
Recyclable Products
Recycling and e-waste disposal are major issues for green consumers. At the end of your TVs life, what should you do with it? For that matter, what can you do with it? Until relatively recently, you couldn't do much at all. It's taken nearly a generation to factor in all the new green design elements.
Neither the technology nor the recycling organization existed to provide truly green electronics. Now, thanks to some major league manufacturers, like Panasonic Australia, who've offered their recycling expertise to the Federal Government's National Waste Policy, there are product design and manufacturing policies in force which minimize the e-waste problem.
The government, manufacturers, designers, and green groups have been progressively improving the situation. Your LCD TV can now be recycled to a far greater extent than ever before. The heavy metals and some of the powerful chemical elements are also easier to manage, thanks to improved technology and better organized waste management.
