Is an Antarctica cruise, too expensive? It is just where you put your value
Most ardent cruisers whether it is main stream or expedition cruisers
, yearn to go to Antarctica. For most visiting Antarctica is connected to those funny creatures, called penguins and most of them do not even know how many different types of penguins there are. If there was one marketing symbol that has worked magic for Antarctica it has been the symbol of penguins. Astonishingly, while the antics of one or two penguins can be utterly breathtaking, viewing hundreds or thousands at one time, is a mind blowing experience. But to see them up close, you really would have to go on a smaller ship which can put you ashore so that you can wander around these incredibly fascinating creatures. Or sit on a comfortable rock and just watch and marvel.
Whether to spend your Antarctica experience on a large ship or a smaller ship is really an issue of value. If you value, your large luxury cabin, which offers you a comfortable bed and balcony to watch the sunrise or sunset, then most likely an expedition cruise is not for you, and I mean true expedition cruising. Yes, there are luxury small ships offering Antarctica, and they do have zodiacs with which you can go ashore and wander around penguins. And they are fine for people who wish to just experience Antarctica perhaps one landing a day, as the passengers on board are most likely a bit older. And again value their cruising environment to be just as important as what they observe of the extra ordinary Antarctica landscape, flora and fauna.
However, if you value, the whole Antarctica experience, that of traversing its incredible landscape where it is possible, cross fast running rivers, stand on the top of a hill and just pause to take in its incredible views, and see not one type of penguins but at least four or five and not just in small groups but hundreds or thousands, then you must choose true expedition cruising. And do so with a crowd of enthusiastic people, who rather spend the time outside, whether there are grey skies or sunshine.
And when you come back on board from one more fabulous excursion, you can share the enthusiasm and glee of happy, slightly tired people, who share their exciting experiences, enjoy their own photos and those of others, and through all this weave a threat of shared experiences that lasts throughout the cruise. It is also not uncommon for people on such a cruise to befriend each other and keep in touch via various means; after all they are part of a select few people who got it, the Antarctica bug. And some of them never let go, they come back over and over again, because Antarctica is such a large continent that experiences may be similar each year but never the same, and penguins and seals might behave the same way but never in the same areas and never under the same circumstances. If you have done it all, Antarctica is waiting for you. Do it the right way, experience it all, by taking an expedition cruise.
