When you listen and learn French as it is spoken, you're more likely to remember how to reply and how to pronounce words correctly when you're called on to speak the language yourself. This method works better than using the phrasebooks on CD that are very popular these days. When you're trying to read, repeat and learn words that are utterly unfamiliar to you, having them used outside of any useful context makes it very hard to develop the skills needed to use them in real life. Hearing how people actually speak is the best way to learn French fast, and with minimal hazard of learning incorrectly.

French, like most other languages, sounds much different than you'd think if you just saw it in written form. One of the greatest challenges with this language is understanding where one word ends and the next begins. By learning how it is spoken, instead of trying to read it, you get used to the language you'll be hearing from native speakers and you'll be ready to understand it when it's spoken to you.
