Each circumstance is different but in a general standing a month of waiting time is sufficient before attempting to get back with an ex.

If, however, your ex gets in another relationship, don't become petty and try to break anything up. Ultimately your goal should be to make your ex happy and if he's happy in a new relationship with someone else, you should be happy for him and move on just like he did. Take it in good stride because that will make an impression on your ex, too. You might be the one that can comfort him if his new relationship doesn't work out (though don't sit and wait around for that to happen).

Generally, those cases are rare and you're still going to have a chance to win your ex back. By acting accordingly, you're going to get the chance to have another round of happiness with your ex.
