When working with business people on growing their business, reaching their goals more easily and creating the kind of life they really desire I often hear them telling me what they believe is missing.
One of the more common ones is discipline.
People say "If only I had more discipline then I know that I'd get on and do what needs doing, which would then mean I'd be more successful".
Seems quite plausible, right?
But if pushing harder and exercising steely control was the answer then surely there wouldn't be so many people who feel like their lives are out of balance?
So let's consider this from a slightly different angle. Imagine that you were doing exactly what you wanted to do in life. Would you need discipline then?
My experience, both personally and with the people I coach, is that you don't have to discipline yourself to do the things in life that you really want to do.
I believe that the perception that more discipline is required emanates from the thought that in order to be successful I have to do things I don't like or don't want to do.
Surely, success is about doing what you enjoy in life and what comes easily?
When you base all you do around a common purpose and know that all that you do contributes to this, then you get into the flow of life.
No more discipline. No more pep talks. No more inner conflict.
A common purpose is simply having a vision for your life and then creating a plan to bring the vision to life. Once you have the plan then simply cut out what's not part of the plan.
