Is pre-marital sex a sin and harmful?
Thou shall not commit adultery also includes fornication
. Jesus included that in "adultery" (Exodus 20:14; Matthew 5:27-30). We have been assuming here that a couple should wait until marriage. A lot of the old reasons for waiting have been wiped out-like dangers of pregnancy, for example. Is sex still worth waiting for?Remember, overcoming temptation to pre-marital sex is not a matter of gritting your teeth and clenching your fists and trying hard to be good because your motivation is fear. Belief is the key. God's law is a law of love, that it is a promise to make you happy in the "obedience of faith." Fear doesn't save anyone from making tragic mistakes, but the gospel is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believes (Romans 1:16). Thousands of youth testify, "It works!".
Will Rogers wisely put his finger on the root of everybody's problem: "What's the matter with the world?" he asks. "Why, there ain't but one thing wrong with every one of us-and thats selfishness? Sex that is done only for selfish reasons drags human beings down to the level of animals. We make a gross mistake when we say that a lustful man prowling through the streets wants a woman. He does not want a woman. He really wants a sexual experience that only a woman can provide. If such a man really wanted a 'woman,' he would want her for her own sake, fully and completely, as a wife. He would desire her, that is, her total personality as his life-companion. That would be real love. But love is not what such a man knows. He is driven by a mere animal lust. He makes a woman to be an object, a thing to be used and afterward discarded like a beer can. Mind you, this is also applicable to the woman herself. Besides, if a man is selfish to "use" a woman in such a way, she is equally selfish and worse.
Did you know that pre-marital sex becomes impossible where there is true love? Yes, God has built into the human soul a higher motivation than mere animal lust. True love is indeed a gift which we receive from Christ. It fills the heart so full that there is no room left for selfish lust. And such love lasts "till death do you part". Paul was right to speak of such love as "great mystery" (Ephesians 5:32), for it is "the mystery of godliness" (1 Timothy 3:16). Satan has tried for thousands of years to extinguish it from human hearts so that nothing shall be left but overwhelming self-interest, like a house that white ants have eaten. It is still standing, but the heart of its timbers has been consumed. Marriage may still exist, but the light of its love is gone. As a human being, you were created to know and cherish true love forever, that you might never cease to be happy. "Christ Jesus.... Sacrificed Himself for us, to set us free from all wickedness and to make us a pure people marked out for His own, eager to do good" (Titus 2:13-14). You have only accepted your freedom!
What about lustful thoughts that come into one's mind? Jesus said, "whosoever looks on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart" (Matthew 5:28). Some say that if an evil thought comes into your mind, you have already committed the sin; so why not go ahead and do that act as well? If you have to repent of one sin, why not repent of two? This is false reasoning and is the cause of much immorality and suffering. Luther once wisely said, "You can't stop the birds from flying over your head, but you can stop them from making a nest on your hair". Satan may present an evil thought, but unless we choose to cherish it, we are not guilty of sin. If we say "No!" to the evil thought, we have gained victory. "When lust hath conceived, it brings forth sin. James 1:15. Jesus was speaking of choosing to do the sin if there should be an opportunity. The choice to do it is the same as doing it, He said: when the temptation comes in the form of an evil thought, thank God we can resist it!
In summary, sex is meant for the married people and several portions of the Bible has made it clear. Anyone who is not married engages in it to satisfy a selfish need and no matter how we try to mask or coin out the situation, that is what it is. If a couple truly love each other and they are not married, they can wait as well until they are? What is the assurance of been married after having sex? Since the Lord God almighty has told us to abstain, we should simply do that.
