Once upon a time everyone felt guilty about using dishwashers; and while there is new evidence to suggest that dishwashers are more environmentally friendly than washing up by hand, it seems that the jury is still out on what the conclusive answer is.

On the one hand, it seems that the machines use less power and less water than the traditional washing by hand method.

While on the other, the power and materials used to create the machine in the first place, plus the chemicals used to clean plates, are seen to take away from the positives.

Whatever the definitive answer is, the fact is that busy families are going to use their dishwashers so why not find ways to make your dishwasher use more environmentally friendly?

You could start off by choosing an eco-friendly model in the first instance. Don't worry about pre-washing or rinsing dishes first, as that only uses more water. Use eco-dishwashing powder, and vinegar instead of harsh chemicals to de-scale the machine (something that people living in hard water areas will have to do regularly).

There are other ways to use your appliances in a more environmentally friendly manner.

Again, starting off with buying energy-saving or greener alternatives is a good move. Modern fridge freezers have built-in power and energy saving devices from everything to how their interior lights work to how much power is drawn and this means your power consumption will be reduced compared to an older model.

If you can't afford to buy a new energy-saving model then it is possible to make your existing fridge freezer use less energy. Keeping your appliance full of food means that it won't have to work so hard to keep cool, but bear in mind that wasting food isn't good for the environment either, and ensuring that ice doesn't build up in the freezer will also help it run better.

The beauty about making greener choices is that they benefit not only the planet, but your bank account too.
