Is your website design a blast from the past?

When the Internet first became popular, many businesses jumped on board right away and created their first company web site

. As an emerging technology, there weren't a lot of rules or guidelines on how to create your website design. In fact the more bells and whistles you could put up, the more cutting edge your site appeared to be. These days, however, there are definite guidelines and best practices to follow. Still, many sites are clinging to some of the old website design trends. Is your site one of them?

Old Trend 1: The black and white television set

This website design trend is remnant of the early days of the Internet. Designs, colors and images are very basic due to limited technology and slow download times. Many website colors are gray and dull and the site as a whole isn't very eye-catching. Visitors can still appreciate its novelty and simplicity, but in all honesty they would much rather be looking at a more colorful and visually appealing website.

Perhaps it's time to trade in Grandma's old black and white for a color TV.

Old Trend 2: Parachute pants

Contrary to the black and white television trend, this website design is overwhelming to the eyes. It has extremely flashy colors and lots of unnecessary animations that rotate or spin across the page. Some even have scrolling text or text that follows along behind the mouse as you move it across the screen. It's important to keep in mind that gratuitous movement and animation can be very distracting to visitors. Who needs all of those "zippers" anyway?

Old Trend 3: The typewriter

Like an old typewriter, this website makes a lot of noise. This site has music playing that can't be turned off and has buttons that make noises when rolling over or clicking on them. Although amusing at first, this type of noisemaking is distracting to the user and should be thrown out with yesterday's newspaper. Ding!

Old Trend 4: Yesterday's newspaper

This is the website that hasn't been updated in a long time. Your products have changed, but the content of your website hasn't. The newsletter on your site hasn't been updated since 1998 when your site was first built. If this is the case, perhaps it's time to start dabbling in social media or even start your own blog. Oh, and while you're updating content, have your site search engine optimized.

Old Trend 5: The Video Cassette Recorder

Remember when you weren't able to just skip to the part of the movie you wanted to see? Remember when you had to rewind all the way to the beginning instead of having the ability to flip through chapters? This is how the VCR website design works, or doesn't work. The navigation is poor and inconsistent and many of the links have broken over time. Users find it very difficult to find the information they need. If this describes your website, be kind, redesign.

Let's face it, it's easy to get tied up with day-to-day business responsibilities, but updating your website design should always remain a priority. If it is not updated regularly, your website will lose the interest of visitors and you will lose opportunities to reach new customers. But, if your site is well maintained, it can be a great tool to grow your business.
