Island Hopping in Spain

When people think of Spain as a tourist destination, the areas that usually come to mind are Madrid and Barcelona, and for the more adventurous traveler, maybe a journey up to Bilbao. But Spain has much more to offer, including fabulous island getaways. Sun seekers will be in paradise on the Spanish islands (Balearics) of Ibiza and Palma, each unique in its own way.

Ibiza is located just off the east coast of Spain, adjacent to Alicante. Starting as a tourist spot in the 1960's by the "Hippy" crowd, Ibiza has grown into a popular tourist spot that has plenty to offer every traveler. History buffs will be entertained in Ibiza Town which contains architecture and relics from Punic, Moorish and Roman times. Also be sure that you stop by one of the many "Hippy Markets" located throughout the town, where handmade crafts and arts are sold.

The real reasons to travel to Ibiza are the beaches and the exciting nightlife. Beautiful sandy beaches are everywhere in Ibiza, with all the amenities and resorts that go along with a beach holiday, including popular water sports. The nightlife scene in Ibiza is like none other. During the summer months some of the most famous DJs travel to Ibiza, specifically the San Antonio strip, to keep the party going until the wee hours of the morning. Be sure to check out the Privilege Club, the largest on the island.

For those looking for something a little different on an island getaway, Palma is the perfect place for that. Palma is the capital of the island of Mallorca, a place that is normally associated with run of the mill resorts and crowded beaches. Palma however is different in the historic aura emitted from the city that blends so well with the pristine beaches, without the touristy feel to it.

The first thing that strikes you when traveling to Palma is the impressive Gothic Cathedral that overlooks the bay of Palma. Building commenced in the 13th century, the Cathedral took hundreds of years to complete. This is evident upon first sight of the cathedral, with its stunning flying buttresses and manicured gardens. Other must sees in Palma include the Bellver Castle, dating back to the 14th century and the plethora of museums. The Mallorca museum is of particular note as it tells the story of the island.

Palma does offer the usual amenities of a resort island, with the pristine beaches and luxurious hotels as well as a bustling nightlife. So whatever it is that you seek on a vacation, the Spanish Islands is sure to satisfy. Book your cheap tickets to Palma and experience the best of the Balearic Islands.
