Isn't The Point Of Social Networking To Generate Leads

? How To Respond to Comments and Messages

Clue me in here, but isn't the entire point of social networking to build relationships, turn them into leads, and turn those leads into sales?One of the most powerful aspects about social networking is you can quickly reach thousands of people (millions in some markets) daily.Tragically though there are some people who are "reaching" new prospects and not doing anything when those people raise their hand!

Let me share with you an example that seems to be occurring regularly throughout social networking.I received a request to "like" a new fan page through LinkedIn.No message was provided, just the link to "like" their page.I didn't know the person who sent me the request.I wrote an email back asking how I could add value by connecting with his page and waited for a response.Now, nearly a month later, no response!This happens to me at least a dozen times a week (maybe they shouldn't be part of my network?).

How would you feel if you reached out to an individual and they never responded?Would you want to do business with them?One of the most difficult points in marketing (whether it is social networking, websites, etc) is simply getting people to raise their hands and express interest.The moment they raise their hand is your moment to ask more questions and see if they would be a match for what you are offering.

The same challenge is occurring when people are sharing their status updates.As you are sharing interest piquing status updates, getting the jet stream of the news feed working for you, are you responding to the "likes" and people making comments?Now as it is easier for people to click "like" than make a comment I understand that you might not be able to reach all of them, but isn't it worth a bit of effort?

For example I noticed a name that "liked" a blog post we had shared.I didn't recognize the person, so I sent them a direct message.To my surprise, they wrote back!They were actually someone who has had remarkable success on Facebook and I wouldn't have known if I didn't reach out.My point is that social networking is about NETWORKING.It is about establishing valuable connections, adding value, and then monetizing those connections.How are you turning your Facebook marketing efforts into money?

I would invite you to consider the following daily activities that can help you not to end up on a rant somewhere:

When you receive a direct message, try responding.Honestly even if it's to let them know you appreciate them taking the time to send you a message.

Make comments back When people comment on your updates, keep the conversation going.Ask questions, share your insights, they took time, invest a small portion of your time.

Have a goal Social networking for the sake of doing something is a waste of time! Set a goal of how many contacts and messages you will do daily and then go on to your next marketing activity.
