. For our economies, tourism means a source of income. But has anyone ever regarded it as a means to better our future, a greener future to be specific? UNWTO definitely thinks this way. Hence, the organization has joined hands with ISO for celebrating World Tourism Day, and for promoting a greener future initiative.

UNWTO brings to light the fact that tourism can be used to promote green growth and environmental sustainability. After all, it is the biggest economic sector in the world. Climate changes can be fought against, by encouraging minimizing energy usage. This is where ISO comes in picture.

Till date, ISO has developed a number of standards for the environment. In fact, every standard that ISO develops, keeps the environment in mind. ISO sets not just standards, but provides practical and solutions that can be used universally. For example, ISO 14001 certification can help you to create a framework for developing your own environmental management system. This is also one of the standards that can be merged with many other ISO standards.

Another ISO standard that helps keep harmony between man and earth is ISO 5001. This particular standard deals with energy management systems. Organizations can utilize ISO 5001 for optimal energy usage. These two standards help the environment. However, one standard directly deals with tourism too. This standard is known as the ISO/TC 228.

Many tourist organizations are undergoing ISO training for this particular standard as it ensures safety and an enjoyable experience for tourists. Along with tourists, ISO/TC 228 also helps the environment as well. It lies down rules/guidelines for tourist companies to follow to assure safety of the place you visit. These type of standards help us, the customers, make informed decisions that favour us, and not against us.

UNWTO and ISO are doing their bit for nature. Now it is up to us as individuals and as organizations to do our share. Organizations should undergo ISO training for implementing the appropriate ISO certification that will guarantee a greener, brighter, and safer future, for us.
