Initially created as an alternative to traditional aluminum siding, which was prone to flaking and rust, vinyl siding was designed to be lighter, affordable, and easier to clean.

As a result, vinyl siding has become one of the most popular house coverings among homeowners around the world. Although it might seem like the perfect choice, it's important to remember that there are some issues with vinyl siding that you should be aware of before you make your purchase.

One of the things the overeager building contractor won't tell you when you call for a quote on vinyl siding is that there are some health concerns associated with attaching it to your house. Traditional vinyl is made from a plastic called PVC (or polyvinyl chloride). This is made from a resin that has been shown to cause cancer in humans. If you're not only concerned about your family's immediate health, but also the health of the workers that make the material and the health of the environment, it's important to realize that making vinyl emits toxic fumes into the air, and neurological damage and respiratory problems are common among those that work or live near vinyl manufacturing facilities.

Another thing that you should keep in mind when choosing siding for your home is durability, and although builders and home supply stores might try to get you to think that vinyl siding is indestructible, there are situations in which this substance can be less dependable than you want. In parts of the country that are subject to extreme hot and cold weather for long periods of time each year, vinyl can crack, puncture, and in some cases, be lifted completely off of the home.

Although most builders will try to tell you that vinyl is the best siding material to choose because it doesn't require the painting or maintenance of other materials, it's not accurate to say that it's maintenance free. Vinyl can collect dirt just like any other surface, and in order to keep your siding looking fresh, it's important to wash it once a year. Be careful though, because leaning ladders up against the siding can dent or crack it. Also moisture can gather under vinyl siding, creating the perfect climate for mold and mildew.
