Soap is basically a salt of a fatty acid. In laymen's terms, fats and oils are combined with alkali in order to produce these soaps. This process is called saponification. The primary step in soap making, is mixing lye and water. This is very crucial since this can release heat and make the mixture hot. Before handling the mixture, you have to make sure that the soap has already cooled down. This is the time when you can add the additives in the mixture before placing in the mold.

It is all about accuracy when you start with soap making. It is very important to ensure that the ingredients are measured exactly. You have to be sure that the ingredient react completely when making soaps. If there are any excess, this may cause the soaps to be harmful.

Next is choosing the method for soap making. The major processes of soaps are the cold process, hot process, melt and pour soap and transparent soap method. You just have to pick the right method that you are comfortable in. With the right method, you will be able to make a whole batch of soaps perfectly.

Soap, as we know it, is basic. Even if this is the case, we need to make sure that the soap that we are using is safe for the skin. Too basic soaps can be itchy and irritating which is why we have to avoid this. Soap must be around the pH level of 7 to 9. To test this, add phenolphthalein on the soap mixture. This drop of liquid must change from colorless to light pink. Too dark pink color means that the soap is too basic and harmful for the skin.

Additives are as important as your other ingredients. These serve the main purpose of actually giving certain properties to the soap. Especially essential soaps, these give fragrance with the soap. The good thing is that additives can be added subjectively. It is up to you how much additives you want to add.

Soap making is indeed an interesting activity. Instead of using the usual soaps that you buy, you can choose to make your own. Since you decide what you put in your soaps, it will be a more enjoyable activity. Once you start with creating your own soaps, you will surely get hooked in soap making.
