It Is Safe To Live In Spain

This article outlines a UN survey about crime and violence taken between 1999 and 2000

. Statistics in the US, England /Wales and Spain are derived from materials based on 100,000 people. The United States of America recorded 8,517 crimes for every 100,000 people as opposed to 10,061 crimes in England/Wales. Spanish crime figures number 2,441. The UN figures for these three world locations on homicides show that in the United States there were five homicides for every 100,000 people, while in England/Wales there were 1.5 homicides'. In Spain, the count was just one killing per 100,000 citizens.

Unfortunately, there are people born who seem to want to commit violence against humanity. In the United States, there were 32 rapes as opposed to England/Wales with 16 rapes, while Spain recorded 15. Burglaries in the United States amount to 7,555 as opposed to 1,721 burglaries in England/Wales. There were only 68 burglaries in Spain.

You read about drug offenses in the world. In the United States, there were 560 drug offenses for every 100,000 people as opposed to 231 England/Wales. Spain recorded 32 drug offenses in their judicial system. What about the safety of the general public? Among recent travelers to Spain, there are those who might remember the Costa del Sol, which became home to British criminals and took on the moniker of 'The Costa del Crime.'

The UN survey continues, that crime is more prevalent in the US and England /Wales than it is in Spain. In many rural areas where the residents all know one another, crime is non-existent. In these regions, strangers stand out. Public safety is of greater concern in Spain's larger cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Alicante, Malaga, and Valencia. Tourists do run into pickpockets and some muggers in these regions. And, immigrant criminals operate around Spanish airports targeting obvious rental cars.

You might have heard of the infamous Euskadi ta Azkatasuna (ETA); this organization is a Basque separatist movement, credited with some extremely violent crime. However, since 1968 ETA's crimes have usually centered on Madrid or Northern Spain. There are three major police forces in Spain. The Guardia Civil and La Policia (Nacional) which are both responsible for the freedoms of all Spaniards and the country's national security. Spain is a safe country with a low crime rate.

The Guardian Civil also patrols the roads and the Spanish auto vistas. They are responsible for enforcing the law including the border control. The third police force is called La Policia (Municipal), and operates under the direction of the local municipality. It is sworn to protect the local residents and enforce local ordinances, and traffic control as well as arresting petty criminals it is safe to live in Spain. It certainly appears safe to live in Spain.
