It's time to be honest

A recent Consumer Reports poll raised some interesting questions it made clear something that's been on my mind a lot recently.

As a political junkie and confirmed Libertarian I share some philosophies with both the major parties, and have just as many differences. The one thing that they both miss is the power of honesty.

We're in for a huge dose of bad news in this country deficit spending is not sustainable, the health bill will not achieve its promised aims, wars on multiple fronts are clearly not on track, the constitution has been shredded by government programs that clearly violate the 10th amendment and all levels of government have grown beyond their means as shown by the number of states that are having emergency budget conferences.

We can disagree on the extent and actual items I mentioned but when you look at government as a whole you have to admit that both parties are lying outright to the American people. No one can have glasses so rose colored as to think we can mandate all health care insurers carry adult children of enrollees till they're 26 without massive rate increases. No one can have glasses so rose colored as to think that we can sustain this level of spending without going bankrupt especially considering just our current debt load if inflation creeps up.

Honesty. The American people are craving it but the media carry political promises as fact and unchallenged.

So how does the consumer reports poll tie in with this? They report that the biggest gripe that travellers have with airlines, and in the top two with hotels andrental carsare added fees.

Fees, I content, are nothing but fiscal dishonesty and just as abhorrent as a political promise'. From a recent rental car reservation I made are the following: Airport concession fee recovery, convention center surcharge and parking fine recovery, customer facility charge, vehicle licensing cost recovery and an energy surcharge.

All of these things are a cost of doing business; I see no reason to think they should not be built into the price' of the rental car unless the vendor wants their price to LOOK lower than it is. This is blatantly a LIE. While I think luggage fees for an airline are just as onerous at least you can make the case that a few people might get away without paying them not so with the car fees but I can tell you it's much less pleasant getting onboard a flight with so many more people cramming carry-on luggage overhead. Since we're faced with a higher price or getting bopped on the head with luggage that has no right going overhead this, I contend, is a lie too. Raise the price $15.00 and tell us why. We can take it; we're a strong, resilient, understanding people if you stop treating us like idiots!

The sub 20% approval rating for congress and the biggest gripes with travel are linked to the same thing. We are looking for someone, anyone, to give us the truth.
