It's whale season on the Queensland coast!
Whale migration is a naturally occurring event wherein whales seek out warmer water conditions, better feeding, and mating grounds during the winter months. They are found in all oceans to the edge of ice packs, but highly migratory among polar waters in summer and tropical waters in winter months. Whale watching season is most likely available off the Queensland coast between later autumn and late spring entering Brisbanes Moreton Bay, Sunshine Coast, and Hervey Bay between the months of June to November. These are the best time to get whale watching together with your friends or loved ones.
Whales belong to the diversified class of the most aquatically-specialised of the world's ocean mammals known as Cetaceans. Humpback whales are especially regarded because of their active nature to respond to people and certain things in close proximity to them.
Humpbacks are considered, one of the most active and acrobatic of the species. They are able to throw themselves totally from the water, and swim lying on their backs with both flippers in the air.
In panic, the fish flee towards the surface in which the whales focus them through releasing columns of air bubbles.
The jaws is then shut, forcing the water out through the baleen plates, and the food is trapped in the bristles on the inside of the baleen. Dive, organize, lunge, regroup, dive every 15 minutes, this kind of feeding routine cycles, again and again, night and day for a month. Hundreds of tons of seafood are taken, and the humpbacks pack on reserves for long months of migration across the sterile open ocean.
As the whale expels its breath, a sudden burst of vapourised water sets into the air producing the classic blow or spout. The whales breath blasts from the blowhole at remarkable speed, perhaps near 450km/hr.
People are offered with an opportunity to watch these amazing creatures first hand, to increase understanding of the beauty of nature and need to nurture these precious wildlife. Numerous whale watching cruises are offered off the whale hotspots during the month of June to Novemebr.
