It is Easy Being Green - Urban Ecology

Don't let Kermit (not to mention anti-eco naysayers) fool you. It CAN be easy to be green. You just have to first arm yourself with a little knowledge and perspective. The primary goal of green living is to create a lifestyle that can sustain itself while being in harmony with the greater environment. This goal extends to our wardrobes, but the fact is that not all of us are able to buy nothing but organic cotton and locally spun wool. Luckily there are other ways to be eco-chic and they stem from three, easy to remember steps:

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Reduce

We love clothes as much as anyone, but acquiring them will really just doesn't make sense anymore. Instead of chasing down every trend and every sale, approach fashion with a more slow and steady approach. Buy quality items that can be used a variety of ways and for a long time. You'll save money in the long run and skip having to throw out heaps of cheap, unworn clothing.

Other ways to reduce include buying brands that are produced locally - or at least in your home country. This reduces the distance your wardrobe has travelled to end up on your body, thereby cutting down on your closet's carbon footprint.

Reuse

If you've followed the above step, then your clothing should be decently made. This means that you don't have to run out and buy a new coat every year, you can "reuse" your one from the previous year(s). This is key for foundation pieces, then you can refresh your style each season with less expensive items like tees and small accessories.

In addition to reusing your own wardrobe, you should reuse someone else's. If you feel weird going into secondhand shops, that's a problem you need to get over, and fast. Buying from used shops means you'll spend less, save a garment from the landfill, and, in many cases, contribute funds to a charity cause. Plus, you have a good chance of finding something that not everyone and their therapist owns. And we know that being original is definitely chic - eco or not.

Recycle

Finally, when you're not shopping a second hand shop, you should be donating to one. You might have grown out of your low-cut mini dress phase, but that doesn't mean your stash belongs in the trash. There are many thrift stores and non-profit organizations that will use your donation to help the less fortunate, and rewards come in monetary form as well. Resale shops will buy clothing that's in good condition and still relevant. If your clothing is damaged beyond repair or simply worn into the ground from years of use, it might not be appropriate to donate them. Instead look for a textile bank, which sorts fabrics for reuse in furniture and other textile industries.

Another way to recycle is to "repurpose" your garment. This might be as simple as giving a dress a dye job or as intricate as making a quilt from your old clothes. Other ideas for repurposing include using old scarves to wrap small gifts and cutting up tees to use as household rags.
