Cigars and celebrations are often closely tied

, and for many people, Cuban cigars are a treat for a special occasion. For those who have the money or desire, the preferred celebratory cigar is always from the island of Cuba. And what better reason to celebrate than the birth of a child?

The interesting thing is that no ones really sure where this tradition began. Generally speaking, the best guess is that men werent allowed to be present at that actual childbirth so he would be outside, often with the other male friends and family, smoking and distributing cigars to help pass the time and alleviate the stress. Other theories are Some British tradition, maybe? and Didnt they start that in the Navy? Amusingly, this hasnt stopped people from embracing the tradition. As to why Cuban cigars are preferred, it derives from the quality.

If youre an American, Cuban cigars also have another reason to be for extra special occasions, you cant legally buy them. As an American, it is illegal to purchase Cuban cigars no matter where you are in the world. Now by no means am I advocating buying illegal cigars, my point is that since theyre illegal, and thus uncommon in the States, they have a higher value to smokers there. The rareness of them, and the fact that if you ever smoked one it was probably while on vacation in a country that doesnt have an embargo with Cuba, will help carve a special place in your heart for the Cuban cigar. Other countries have an easier time obtaining Cuban cigars, and thus the illicit thrill is less. Yet they still maintain a special cache as the top cigars for those in the know.

The tie between cigars and celebration may have something to do with the grandeur of a cigar. Theyre big, they require preparation, they take a while to smoke, etc. One doesnt just pull a cigar out of a pack, light up, and finish it as part of a regular smoke break. Its something you plan for and do properly. They also arent cheap. Cigars, Cuban or not, cost enough that one attaches a high value to them.

In the end, it makes a lot of sense for cigars to be part of a celebratory ritual, as they seem almost made for such a purpose. This is why you still see people handing out cigars to celebrate birth, either kitschy ones with pink or blue ribbons, bubble gum cigars, or decadent Cuban cigars.
