It's Advised To Consult A Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Before Surgery
When adding onto a home or remodeling a basement
, savvy homeowners interview several contractors and get multiple bids. The difference in bids can sway the owner's final decision, as much as the quality of work presented in a decent formal proposal that includes before and after shots plus glowing letters of recommendation from former clients.
The same goes when interviewing a surgeon. Of course there's a difference between emergency surgery and elective, cosmetic surgery. Emergencies happen and rarely does a patient have a specialist's name in their fist waiting to take their call. Instead, patients in this emergency-type scenario rely on referrals from the hospital staff and emergency room doctors.
When electing to have surgery, however, it's as important to interview several surgeons beforehand to ensure getting one that is a personal fit. There's nothing more personal than surgery, says Denver plastic surgeon Jeffrey R. Raval, MD, FACS. "The most important piece to a person's identity and psyche is, without doubt, the face. So why would a patient proceed with plastic surgery without fully investigating the surgeon's reputation and performance record...especially when they'd make a point to get three or more bids on a hardwood floor job."
Among the things to ask your prospective surgeon:
- How many procedures like mine have you performed?
- Can you show me before & after pictures?
- What do you recommend I do to prepare for the surgery to get the best results and/or quicker recovery?
- Are their specific risks associated with this procedure?
- What are alternative treatments to consider?
- What is the recovery like?
- When will I see results of the surgery?
- When can I begin wearing make-up or skincare products?
- What can I do to maintain the results?
Interviewing other patients who have had a similar treatment can be the most telling of research. Ask the doctor for references willing to share their experience. A good experience is marked by a pleasant process all the way through to recovery. It is imperative to be able to communicate to your Dr. what your desired results will be so your Dr. can discuss your expectations with you. It's important to establish a level of confidence and trust. You also need a surgeon who is at the highest level of expertise and medical certification who is accessible to answer questions whenever you need him or her. Choosing the right Dr. ensures your surgery will be done once and done correctly.
