What you need to do is to pour the bleach along with the water and let it run a complete cycle or two. Once you are sure that the smell of mildew is no longer there, you can drain the solution and wipe your washing machine dry.

Bear in mind that you need to do this regularly and not just when you feel like it. By making it a habit, these steps can help keep your clothing mildew free.
