Jack Straw Learns To Drive

The economic climate has hit us all hard, but it seems that the repercussions have been felt as far out as the Houses of Parliament. Members of Parliament are being forced to kerb their spending and their expenses have been called into question time and time again. Do they really need the moat around their second home, or all those sky channels?

Jack Straw, MP for Blackburn, who has had the privilege of chauffeur services for the past thirteen years, is taking a driving test refresher course. He has also been taking lessons on how to cope with driving on the motorways, and brushing up on skills for driving in the dark. In the past thirteen years in the cabinet he has done a little driving but nothing considerable, and felt he needed to freshen up to take to the roads. He has mainly used a private driver who will come and pick him up and take him to his engagements, which is something we would all like!

The new government have decided to reign in ministerial perks, an idea that is welcomed by the general public and has been called for for months in this time of austerity. It seems a little unfair how we are experiencing a mass of potholes yet MPs are being able to claim for second homes, trips abroad and a whole host of other unnecessary costs.

In 2009, Jack Straw, who was at the time the Justice Secretary, enacted a law that would see reckless driving punishments doubled from the then current two year prison sentence to five years behind bars. Maybe he is worried that his driving will be classed as reckless. The law did see large numbers of people seeking refresher courses to better improve their driving skills to shape up under the new law.

Jack Straw has remained as one of the three staunch members of the Labour Cabinet, along with Alistair Darling and Gordon Brown, having remained in the cabinet for the past thirteen years. He has also spent time as the Foreign Secretary and the Leader of the House, but stood down from the bench last year to become the MP for Blackburn.
