Jade Buddha Temple: An Active Centre of Chinese Buddhism

The Jade Buddha Temple is situated in the modern town of Western Shanghai. The greatly revered temple which remains an active centre of Chinese Buddhism was built in 1928 in imitation of the architecture of the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Upturned eaves, symmetrical halls, courtyards and bright saffron hued exterior walls make the temple stand out amidst its urban environs. The temple comprises three principal quarters: Mahavihara Hall, Devaraja Hall and the Jade Buddha Tower. In addition, the holy premises contain four auxiliary halls and a dining room.

However, the most celebrated aspect of the temple remains to be its two Buddha statues made of white jade from which the temple derives its name. A monk by the name of Huigen brought the two magnificent statues to China from Burma in the late 19th century. Although a temple was constructed in 1882 to house the statues, it was destroyed during the Qin Dynasty revolution. The current temple was built in order to house the two statues with due respect and grandeur.

The two Buddha statues are of considerable religious, cultural and artistic value. The Buddha in a seated position is housed in the Jade Buddha Tower, measures 190cm in height and is decorated with encrusted agate and emerald. Portraying the Sakyamuni in meditation it realistically brings out the inner calm and loving-kindness of the Buddha. The 96cm long recumbent Buddha Statue kept in the Recumbent Buddha Hall depicts the "lucky pose". The temple is also contains many other statues of the Sakyamuni and different deities and other artifacts. The calm spiritual atmosphere pervading the temple and its cultural importance makes a visit to the Jade Buddha Temple an excellent experience of China's socio-religious traditions.
