Jamia Millia Expels 300 Students For Attendance Dearth
Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) University has expelled 300 of its first year students
pursuing variouspostgraduate courses at the varsity for being unable to meet the attendance requirement.
The university, widely popular and sought after for its various courses, had introduced the semester system in the academic session 2010-11 in its postgraduate courses.
According to university authorities, the rules mentioned in the admission prospectus clearly mention that students who fail to meet the required minimumattendance of 75% will be barred from sitting for the first semester examinations and will also not be allowed to seek readmission into the second semester/
The university provides 15% relaxation in minimumattendance only to special cases such as sportspersons or students suffering from illnesses.
Media coordinator at JMI Simi Malhotra said that the decision by the university to expel the 300 students was not something new. "In the annual mode of examinations, students who did not meet the minimumattendance were not allowed to appear fro the final examinations. The same rule has applied here as well," she said.
Some students who have been expelled have complained that they had not been made aware that they were being expelled due to lack of attendance.
JMI Vice Chancellor Najeeb Jung said, "We have taken this step in accordance with the university ordinances. We want all students to realize that pursuing courses at this university is a serious thing and any kind of non-serious attitude will not be tolerated."
Several students from the 300 who have been expelled have said that they would take legal action against the university if they were not allowed to sit for the examinations.
