Janardhana Swamy Temple A Revered Shrine Of Hindu Pilgrimage

The coastal town of Varkala in the Thiruvananthapuram district Kerala

, is a burgeoning tourist destination due not only to the increasing popularity of its sun-kissed beaches facing the Arabian sea but also the mineral rich natural springs called the Varkala formation. Spa treatment centres and Ayurvedic clinics are springing up around these waters, but away from the conventional draws of the leisure lover lies some of the most significant religious sites of an Indian pilgrimage. Chief among these is the Janardhana Swamy Temple.

This 2000 year old temple is dedicated to the Lord Vishnu as well as Hanuman, the protector monkey god. Painted images of the latter deity are dotted around the temple grounds, evidently the work of skilled craftsmen. The temple itself is situated along the Varkala beach road, against the backdrop of an opalline ocean, and is enthroned atop a steep hill which must be scaled via a long flight of stairs. The architecture of the abode is typical of traditional Kerala style, with the circular inner sanctum roofed by a dome of copper tiles whose ceilings are engraved with intricate Navagrahas. Entrance into this sanctum is prohibited for non-Hindus, but they may ponder the large banyan tree within whose trunk is engraved serpentine images of animistic deities. There is also a prevailing belief that the bathing in the holy water of the temple pond will wash away all sins and purify ones soul.

The large Dutch bell inscribed in Latin which is installed at the central shrine is a curiosity. It is said to be a gift from the captain of a marooned ship as thanks for the prayers of the temple priest who successfully prayed for winds to speed the vessel on its voyage.

The Janardhana Swamy Temple is the site of the Arattu Festival, one of the most important religious events of Kerala, which is held annually during Meenam (March-April). Ten thousand devotees congregate everyday to take part in the proceedings the highlight of which is a spectacular procession led by richly decorated elephants.

Visitors to Varkala are encouraged to look in on this sacred site while soaking up the sun and surf at a Varkala hotel. In particular, The Gateway Hotel Janardhanapuram Varkala is a full-serviced beach resort overlooking magnificent sea views while being only minutes away from this revered historic landmark.
