Before going online or to a store to compare computers, you should familiarise yourself with these key terms that you will hear or read while buying a laptop:

Notebook A notebook is another way to refer to a laptop. You may also hear netbooks which should not be confused with a notebook.

Hardware The hardware of a computer is any physical part of the computer.


Software The software are the applications that you can install onto your computer which can be anything from software protecting your computer to applications that you use to write documents.

WiFi Wi Fi is wireless internet capabilities where your computer is able to access the internet without the use of a cable.

USB USBs are very important as some of the most important laptop accessories are connected to your computer with the use of USB ports. Your printer, camera and external hard drive are all devices that connected to your computer through the USB port. Your computer should have a recommended three to four USB ports.

Processor Type There are different types of processors that your computer runs on which can be Celeron, AMD or Pentium.

Processor Speed This speed works alongside the RAM as it allows your computer to work fast when it is opening and closing programs and running more than one computer program at a time.

RAM RAM stands for Random Access Memory. This is what allows your computer to function quickly and without any problems. The standard number of RAM is one gigabyte (1GB). Some computers come with more and others less.

The more knowledge you have around laptops, the better the hardware you will end up with. If you are confused by what the person is saying, you may end up buying a computer that does not suit your needs, so be familiar with these key terms.
