Jaw-tmj-headaches- Neuromuscular Dentistry Helps Relieve Pain
One of the most common jaw disorders is related to the temporomandibular joint
, which is the ball-and-socket type joint on either side of your head where the lower jaw connects to the temporal bone of the skull. Since TMJ disorders are dental in nature, some sort of trauma to the jaw causes most cases. Any habits that overwork the jaw muscles can intensify the pain of a TMJ disorder, such as clenching or grinding your teeth.
Occlusion, much like the fit of your shoe, is how your teeth fit together. When your teeth do not fit together properly, your muscles spasm, producing too much lactic acid that causes cramps and pain. Occlusion misalignment stimulates muscular hyperactivity that results in TMD and/or craniofacial pain.
What is Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder?
If your jaw clicks or pops, this is a sign of TMJ disorder. Joint sound is one of the most recognized signs of TMJ disorders. TMJ symptoms include:
*Clicking and/or difficulty when opening and closing your mouth
*Frequent headaches
*Neck and/or shoulder pain
*Sensitive teeth when no dental problems can be found
*Jaw pain or stiff jaw when chewing, biting, eating or yawning
*Earaches without an infection
Between 5 and 10 percent of Americans suffer from TMJ symptoms that require some form of treatment.
Diagnosis and Evaluation
In Dr. Stender's office, he uses the most advanced diagnostic tools available to narrow down the cause of your TMD or craniofacial pain to determine the best treatment to eliminate the problem. A detailed medical and dental history will be documented, including all past medical and/or dental problems and treatments, any history of trauma (especially to the head or neck), specific questions about your symptoms, and the nature and duration of pain and jaw problems.
In addition, a range of motion test will be completed to check the movement of your jaw and whether there is a deviation or deflection of the jaw upon opening. Muscle palpation, which checks for possible muscle contractions and trigger points that could indicate a problem with the chewing muscles, will also be performed.
An evaluation of the hard tissues is accomplished using the Galileo 3-D X-ray, while evaluation of soft tissue is accomplished by the following:
*BioEMG II Muscle Testing - Measures and records how the muscles connected to your jaw function when your jaw moves and relaxes
*The BioJVA - Also known as Joint Vibration Analysis, records audible and sub-audible pops and clicks from your jaw joints as you open and close your mouth.
Evaluation of jaw movements are often documented by:*JT-3D Computerized Jaw Tracking - Measures and records how your jaw moves during normal activities. *T-Scan III - Understanding the force, timing and balance of your bite is essential to evaluating the health of your teeth. Treatment of TMD and/or Craniofacial PainTo treat TMD or Craniofacial pain, Dr. Stender uses a number of different methods. One method is with the NTI-tss Dental Device, which is a pre-fabricated matric that Dr. Stender retrofits and customizes to your front teeth. The most distinguishing characteristic of the NTI device is that it creates exclusive contact between the front teeth only. Preventing any molar or canine contact is a key element to preventing jaw clenching and teeth grinding that can cause intense pain. The design of the NTI device is based on your unique bite presentation. Dr. Stender also ensures that the device design does not overly "open" your mouth, which would result in another negative sensory input. The NTI device fits comfortably on either the upper or lower front teeth and is often worn during sleep. If your jaw hurts, pay attention to where it is located, keep your teeth apart by placing your tongue gently to the top of your mouth, stretch your jaw by gently opening and closing, and call Dr. H. Robert Stender, your dentist in Pasadena, to evaluate if you are developing a serious TMJ problem. by: Gen Wright
