Jeddah: The Grandmother City

Jeddah is an important city in Saudi Arabia located along the coast of the Red Sea

. It is among the most prosperous cities throughout Asia. The city receives a large number of pilgrims on their way to Mecca, the Muslim holy city. The city has historic significance. The name is coined from the Arabic word 'jaddah', which means grandmother. This is due to the fact that many people believe that the city is where Eve, the grandmother of all mankind, was buried.

Due to its importance, the city is well connected to other cities in the country and around the world via a well connected communication network and an international airport.

There are different places to visit in and around the city. There are historic sites and many places for relaxation such as gardens and parks. There are also a number of festivals and other events that you can enjoy in the city. Here are some of the tourist attractions to consider.

Among the best tourist attractions are the scenic beaches. Some of the beaches are the Durrat Al-Arus, Crystal Resort, Al Remal and Bait Albahar. You will have the opportunity to see coral reefs and other aquatic life apart from enjoying the sand, sun and breeze. Jeddah has some of the best scuba diving spots where you can exercise your passion.

Besides the beaches, the shopping areas offer another kind of special attractions. Balad is a great shopping area that has numerous shopping malls that stock items from different places like Paris and Milan. In addition to the branded products, there are also traditional street markets. Balad also creates a blend of the new and the old in the form of high-rise buildings and traditional ones.

You will also have the opportunity to learn more about the Islamic heritage from several places like the Biet Nassif building. The house used to belong to the Nassif family in the 1870's but has been restored to serve as a cultural center. There are different programs and exhibitions held there to promote the Islamic heritage.

There are also several museums that store ancient materials that will give you more insight into the city's past. The Municipality Museum is located in the only building that points to the period of the British Legation in the city. Other museums that you may include in your itinerary are the Castle of Cultural Arts Museum, Islamic Fiqh Academy and Abdul Raouf Khalil's Museum.

Enjoy your time at a variety of amusement parks, such as the Prince Sultan Aviation Academy, Fantasy Garden, Sanabel Park, Sindibad Park, Train Lake and Al-Shallal Theme Park. Although the parks in the city are relatively few, they offer a great deal of excitement. There are several indoor and outdoor activities that you can take part in at the parks. The atmosphere is also great for relaxation, which should form an important part of your vacation.

There are several other special attractions in the city, which include: the Makkah Gate, Floating Mosque, Shell Square, Bicycle Square and Victorious Horse Square.
