Jewellery Making For The Complete Beginner

All girlies like to wear jewellery - It's inborn !

You've found the PERFECT dress, shopped till you dropped to find the PERFECT shoes, but matching jewellery to pull it all together, well there's another story !

You don't need Gok Wan to tell you, you look good naked, but jewellery naked, well, I'm sorry to say, that is just a no-no !

YOU can change all that and in that's why so many girlies have discovered the love of Jewellery Making ...

What's more is you can personalise it to you and your style.

Let's face it, there's nothing better than creating your own unique jewellery creations, that you can feel extremely happy, showing off to everyone !

When you first begin Jewellery Making, it can all seem a little overwhelming, but don't get confused by all the options open to you.

Decide on a budget and stick to it, you can buy as much or as little as you like and once you get all the important bits like tools to work with, the rest is just stocking up mainly beads and findings that you run out of.

One of the best bits about Jewellery Making is choosing your beads .... Again, this all comes down to personal taste, but there are many types of beads to choose from, so depending upon the style of jewellery you like to wear, be it chunky, delicate, bright or toned down, you can choose the beads of your choice to match your uniqueness and personality.

Beads are available in different materials, the most popular of these being glass beads, as they come in bright colours which shimmer in the light with acrylic beads coming a close second, as the patterns can be quite a lot more elaborate, as the patterns are easier to make in acrylic, as opposed to glass, lots of the designs I still make today, have a mix of both glass and acrylic.

Findings are another major part of jewellery making, as these form the skeleton make-up of your jewellery, holding it all together and giving it i

There are lots of different jewellery items you can make up, most of these will include necklaces, bracelets and earrings, but there are plenty of other things you can make, as you get more into it.

For earrings, decide upon the type of earring you want to make. Fishhook ear wires are the most common for pierced ears, but you can also get clip on earrings for non-pierced ears. Use head pins (these are like long thin nails) to thread your favourite beads onto, make a loop at the top of the pin and attach to your earring.

For necklaces, you need thread (choose one that has a thickness to match the beads of your choice), I use tiger-tail for most of my necklaces.

You will need jump rings and a lobster clasp to fatten to the end of your necklaces.

A bead board is also a very handy piece of kit, this is something I definitely recommend, as it makes the measuring of necklaces so much easier.

This is something you can always get at a later stage ... I use mine all the time and would not be without this fab bit of kit.

The basic tools you will need are round-nose pliers, flat-nose pliers and wire cutters.

You will use these for creating loops, attaching findings and cutting wire flush.

You will use these again and again and with these three tools you will be able to get started very quickly and easily making your own jewellery.

We hope this has given you a little taster for jewellery making.

My bead obsession has turned into a full time business called 'Bedazzle Beads' supplying all the bits you need to get you started in this addictive hobby .

I hope to pass my love of jewellery making onto you and look forward to seeing YOUR jewellery creations in our online design gallery.

All the best
