Jewelry Appraisals
Proper appraisals will provide sufficient information to help verify the facts about the jewelry you may have just purchased as well as the jewelry in your collection. Given today's costs it is important that the gem is accurately represented. New synthetic materials and treatments can affect the value. Plus, a current appraisal will help update value estimations of existing collection. By having the proper estimations, you will be able to purchase sufficient insurance to help protect against theft, loss or damage, thereby allowing you to replace the jewelry with a comparable quality. Appraisals can also help you establish adequate information to legally claim your jewelry when it is recovered by the police.

When selecting a gemologist-appraiser, it is wise to obtain the names of several appraisers and compare their credentials. Extensive formal training and experience is required to become a qualified gemologist-appraiser. After checking credentials, check for the title C.G.A. (Certified Gemologist Appraiser), awarded by the American Gem Society or M.G.A. (Master Gemologist Appraiser) awarded by the American Society of Appraisers. The two titles mentioned, represent the highest awards presented by the gemological appraisal field. Along with formal training, you should check the appraiser's length of experience. The appraiser should have several years of experience in a well-equipped laboratory.
After you have your jewelry appraised, check with your insurance agent to be sure you have proper coverage, if possible, you should have coverage that will allow for comparable quality replacement of your jewelry. Take photos and catalog all your jewelry. Keep all your receipts and retain as many written details as possible (i.e., certificates of authenticity). When you catalog your jewelry, it is a good idea to make a photocopy and keep the second copy at a separate location, such as friend or family members home, maybe even your lawyers office.
I hope this information provides you with sufficient reason to have your jewelry appraised, especially your existing collection. Having the proper information available to you will help insure that you have the proper coverage to help replace any loss, theft or damage. Appraisals also can help you describe your jewelry to the police, which can help them recover your property in a timely fashion.
