Jingshan Park Views Beijing In A Different Angle

Built in 1179, the Jingshan Park was initially a creation of the famous Jin Dynasty. Stretching over 57 acres the park is located more towards the north of the Shenwu Gate of the Forbidden City. The Jingshan Hill, with an elevation of about 48 metres, is part of the Jingshan Park and affords its visitors a birds eye view of the entire city of Beijing.

The hill was an addition to the park during the Ming Dynasty in 1420 and was then known as the Long Live Hill. The name Jingshan Hill was coined during the Qing Dynasty in 1655.

The Jingshan Park was originally used by Beijings royalty. The emperors of the Qing, Ming and Yuan Dynasties were known to have used the parks facilities for relaxation and for viewing the rest of the city.

Today, visitors to the Jingshan Park will find that the Jingshan Hills summit features five pavilions for viewing of the city - especially a clear view of the Forbidden City and its layout. The pavilions, including the Wanchun Pavilion, the highest, originally featured a copper Buddha statue each representing one of the five tastes; salty, acidy, spicy, bitter and sweet.

Visitors can pay their respects to the imperial ancestors at the Shouhuang Palace. Visitors can also explore the Guande and Yongso Palaces which were used during bygone days to lay in state the deceased leaders of the Qing Dynasty.
