Jobs in Sales Management - How your Resume and Cover Letter Can Do More

Jobs in sales management aren't sales. Not of products at least. Sales management is more a position of leadership. You still have to sell, you sell yourself to your sales team and also to the board that over sees your team and its progress. Basically, you're selling on two sides.

For that reason jobs in sales management require more than a sales person does. Many times a sales person is moved up from sales. Which sounds like the logical thing to do but isn't. What a sales person does and what a sales manager does are very different. Sales managers' coach and mentor, develop strategies, evaluate markets and communicate the companies' expectations. That is besides the administrative tasks they deal with.

Why is this good? Companies are usually open to a capable sales manager for this reason. Jobs in sales management, as I mentioned aren't sales of products and at times the gap between the two is to great a challenge for a sales person that gets promoted to manager. Working with a team of sales people isn't always easy. For a job in sales management, that's where I saw an opportunity. Applying for these jobs in sales management got a lot easier once I understood this fact. Great sales people don't always make great sales managers.

The way I put this into practice was with a strong resume and cover letter. I plaid up my skills in coaching and mentoring more so than past sales experience. It's a good idea to find information on the company you're applying to and put together a custom resume and cover. Using a cover letter program that allowed me to customize my resume and cover letter to a specific field made it easier to send out the number of resumes I sent. I applied to many different places and I didn't want a one size fits all sort of resume and cover to go to all of them.

In my experience, that worked! I focused on what I understood would be required for a job in sales management and submitted a resume and cover letter that communicated my understanding of what the position required. I wanted to paint a clear solution to this problem if the problem existed. Doing this helped me secure more interviews and a job offer.
