Jock Itch - A Groin Problem
Jock itch, also called tinea cruris other ringworm of the groin
. It's caused by a type of fungus called dermatophytes. Fungi commonly mature on or in the top layer of skin. They may or may not reason an infection. Fungi develop best in warm, damp regions of the body such as the groin, inner thighs, and buttocks. It also often occurs in people who are overweight, but anyone can get the infection. Using public showers and locker rooms increases your chances of getting jock itch. Fungi grow best in the steamy rooms among moist towels, sweaty workout clothes, and wet floors. Jock itch can develop when tight garments trap moisture and heat.
Men and women come across the illness worldwide, although it is seen more frequently in the moist tropics. It can occasionally accompany athlete's foot and ringworm. The rash may involve only your groin, but it may spread to include your internal thighs, genitals, and areas around your anus, rectum, or vagina. Jock itch may be contagious. It can be passed from one person to the next by direct skin-to-skin contact or contact with unwashed clothing. Jock itch usually responds to self-care. Wash the rash with soap and water. Softly remove any pieces of dried skin, and spread an antifungal cream over the rash. Apply the cream beyond the edge of the rash.
Over-the-counter antifungal creams, powders, and sprays will perhaps clear it up. Apply topical over-the-counter antifungal or drying powders, such as those that contain miconazole, clotrimazole, other tolnaftate. Jock itch is treated with one of two types of antifungal drugs azoles or allylamines. Generally, allylamines need a shorter treatment time, while azoles are less costly but require longer treatment time. Home remedies for Jock Itch is also useful. Tea tree oil can also be used since it is a natural anti-fungal. Garlic is also known to have anti-fungal properties because it contains allicin.
Oral medications for fungal infection may alter the effectiveness of warfarin, an anticoagulant drug that decreases the clotting ability of your blood. Powders with menthol or zinc oxide like Gold Bond medicated powder, and creams containing 1% hydrocortisone should help soothe the itch. Good hygiene is the most important thing you can do to help prevent jock itch. Shower or take a bath daily, as well as after playing sports. Keep the area as dry as possible by always using a clean towel after showering or swimming. Avoid sharing towels. Treatment for jock itch is quick and usually effective, but the condition often comes back sometimes.
