Jose Antonio Serbias Protest And Passion At Agora Gallery
With a style he calls protest art, Jose Antonio Serbia paints memories of the Brooklyn
streets of his childhood with a sharply focused undercurrent of activism. In his Audacity series, Serbia engages viewers with his wild visions of expressive, figural trees, mysterious forms and scenes, and grids of brick walls. Thin, fluid washes of pigment form an ethereal backdrop for the intricate line work of these detail driven drawings, built from a wide variety of mixed mediums on canvas including ink, watercolor and acrylic paints, charcoal and pastels. A self-taught artist from an early age, Serbia abandoned the confines of traditional art to follow his own muse into the enigmatic symbolism of his imagination.
Born in Brooklyn, NY and of Puerto Rican descent, Jose Antonio Serbia grew up struggling to determine his own cultural identity. He now lives in the Ocala National Forest in Salt Springs, Florida and works as a Disaster Assistance Reservist with FEMA, frequently traveling to the sites of natural disasters where he creates many of his paintings after long days working as part of the recovery efforts.
