July Events In Queens For Families

If you want to treat yourself and your family to a fun and educational free event in Queens

, I would suggest the 34th Annual Thunderbird American Indian Mid-Summer Pow Wow. This event is held annually at the Queens Farm Museum and features traditional Native American dancing, music, games, and food. It's a great introduction to Native American culture for kids, and adults are sure to enjoy the music and traditional garb. Since it is at the Queens Farm museum you can also check out the museum itself. It features a lot of items from New York's rich agriculture past. When most people think of New York State they think of the metropolitan center that is New York City. Although the city is vibrant, New York State is also one of our nation's biggest agricultural contributors. New York's agricultural past and present is not a story that is told very often but it is one worth knowing.

This month also marks a lot of new residents moving to Queens, and I am not just talking about people. Thousands of state trees will be moving to parks and streets around Queens as part of the city's initiative to make the city more verdant. This is an ongoing free NYC event that you can get involved in. It will benefit the boroughs for generations to come so make sure to bring the kids. Contact the parks department to get involved because they are looking for volunteers. Your city needs you!

Fans of the off-the-beaten-path need to check out the musical saw festival happening in Queens on July 16th. This NYC music event sounds too weird to be true but it is something of a Queens tradition which turns 10 years old this summer. They hold the record for the largest musical saw ensemble. Even skeptics will be moved by the graceful notes of the saw. This is one of those things that you need to see and hear to believe, so check it out.

If you plan on taking your family to the beach a lot this summer, might I suggest a free event on NYC's Rockaway Beach? I am talking about the 17th annual sand castle competition. Builders from around the city and some from even further will be competing to build the most impressive sand structure, and yes these sand sculptures are very impressive! After they are built you get to tear them down which is half the fun!
