Jump Starting A Car
If your vehicle will not start do not immediately call a breakdown firm
, try to jump start it. Jump-starting a vehicle takes only a few minutes, saving you at least an hour or so of waiting for the breakdown firm to arrive.
Park the dead vehicle near the booster vehicle, making sure that the two vehicles are not touching. Ensure that the batteries of the two vehicles are close enough to connect with the jumper cables. Turn off the ignition on both vehicles, put on the handbrakes and put them into neutral or park. Turn off both vehicles lights, if they are in a position that could be a hazard to other vehicles keep their hazard lights on.
To improve your chances of a successful jump-start only use good quality jump cables. Carry a set with you and you will vastly improve your chances of someone stopping to help you to jump-start your car. Keep the clamps clean and rust free. Ensuring that the terminals on both batteries are both clean and rust free is important too. Adding some steel wool to your jump lead set is a good idea, so that you can easily clean up the battery terminals.
Start by clamping the red cable onto the + (positive) terminal on the battery of the dead vehicle then onto the positive terminal of the booster vehicle. Repeat with the black cable, but connecting to the - (negative) terminal on the booster vehicle and to an un-painted surface within the engine compartment on the dead vehicle or the engine block. Ensure that the cables are not touching any part of the engines that will move when the vehicles are started. Start the booster vehicle first leave the engine to idle for a few minutes, and then start the dead vehicle. Let both vehicles idle for a few minutes whilst connected.
If the dead car does not start immediately, try to jump-start it twice more. Trying any more than 3 times will drain the booster car's battery and may cause damage. When disconnecting the cables, be sure not to allow any of the cables to dangle into the engine and touch any moving parts or to touch each other. Do not switch the dead car off straight away. You have to drive it for a bit, so that the battery will have enough charge in it to re-start the car again.
