Junagarh Fort

Junagarh Fort is located in the city of Bikaner in Rajasthan India and is amongst the few forts that are not built on high hill but on plain land

. In those days, a fort built on high hill was considered good from the point of view of security from enemies. Despite this, the Junagarh holds the distinction of not been conquered by invaders

The city of Bikaner was itself founded by Rao Bika, son on Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur city. Since, Rao Bika was the second son of Rao Jodha, he had no legal claim on the throne of Jodhpur. Hence, Rao Bika, with support of his father, set out on a military expedition. He conquered small chieftains that ruled the land that was at that point of time called Jangladesh. With his conquest he became the master of the region and founded the city of Bikaner.

At first a small fortress was constructed that housed the royal family. Later, a new fort, Chintamani was constructed by Raja Raj Singh which we today know as the Junagarh Fort. The Bikaner Fort was constructed and added upon by sixteen generation. Hence, the design of the fort is a fine amalgamation of different kind of architecture. The first is the Rajput style of sixteenth century which was influenced by the Gujarati and the Mughal architecture; the second is the semi western style of architecture that developed during the rule of Maharaja Dungar Singh and the third is the revivalist Rajput style during the reign of Maharaja Ganga Singh.

In all, the Bikaner fort occupies a total area of 1,63,119 sq. yards protected by over fourteen feet wide and forty feet high wall. Further protection to the fort is provided by twenty five feet deep and fifteen feet wide moat. Two gates - Karan Parole and Chand Parole serve as the entrance point of the fort. There are a number of palaces inside the fort. Among them are Karan Mahal (public audience hall), Anup Mahal (privy council room), Phool Mahal, Badal Mahal (Hall of Clouds), Gaj Mandir, Dungar Niwas and Durbar Hall. Apart from this, there are galleries and museums that display rich collection of arms and articles used by the rulers. There is the Fort Museum and the Maharaja Gaj Sighji gallery.
