Juris Doctor Law Schools award the professional law degree or Juris Doctor or doctor

of Jurisprudence degree to individuals who have successfully completed law school. Law students in America can get admitted to the bar or obtain a license to practice law in federal courts or in the state only if they have been awarded this degree. It is only the state of California that admits admission to the bar on completion of the law office study also. Most lawyers in the 1930s and 1940s became lawyers with an L.L.M. degree after completing an apprenticeship with an established attorney. The law degree was introduced to limit the number of attorneys and to raise their quality. Some of the mandatory courses covered in law school are courses on criminal law, civil procedures, contracts, TORTS, and professional responsibility.

Admission Process To Law Schools

J.D. is usually a terminal degree for most lawyers. Other degrees like LL.M. or Master of Laws or J.S.D. or Doctor of Juridical Science are for international practice of law. Law schools in the United States admit students to law courses only after they complete their undergraduate degree. The students should have obtained a decent grade point average and a good score on the Law School Admission test or LSAT. They are also evaluated through essays, letters of recommendations, short-answer questions, and other methods. Extracurricular activities are given due weightage as is work experience and their course of study. The tuition fees are very high and scholarships can be obtained and maintained only if their GPA is consistent.

Eligibility Criteria For Law Schools

The School of Law must be accredited with the American Bar Association for its students to be eligible to sit for the bar exam. The requirements promulgated by the ABA must be fulfilled by these schools to be eligible. If the school is not accredited with the ABA but with the state legislature or bar examiner, then the students are eligible to sit for the bar exam of that state only. The state of California is probably the only state in the US who gives state specific accreditation. However once they have passed that exam and practiced for a specific number of years, they are eligible to sit for the bar exams in other states too.

Colleges Of Law With Online Courses

Online and correspondence courses in law are allowed only in Colleges of Law in California. These courses are useful for people who have full time jobs or have families and still would like to take a course in law. Virtual classes are conducted at regular intervals with live video conferences. These courses are less strenuous and less costly than a regular course and thus are suitable for the working professional. There is interaction between students and professors through email chat sessions, or personal meetings if needed.
