The Civil Aviation General Directorate (SHGM) in Turkey has released a press statement, as reported by the Hrriyet Daily News, announcing new initiatives that they will be taking in order to improve the English levels of their pilots and air traffic controllers. This effort is being made in order to increase safety and minimize risks. Who knew proper English could actually save lives?

Henceforth, pilots and air traffic controllers will be required to take English proficiency tests to ensure that they meet the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization. They will need to be able to communicate in English using proper aviation phraseology, communication strategies, and with the ability to identify and correct miscommunications. They will be evaluated on vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, understanding, and of course, grammar. It is important to the SHGM that their employees are able to communicate flawlessly internationally. Pilots and air traffic controllers who receive below a certain score on the test will be "denied employment".
