Just What Does Wildlife Photography Entail?

Most people tend to think that wildlife photography is just about capturing the images of large animals while on a tour or safari

. Far from it, this type of photography covers every aspect of the wild animal kingdom including water (freshwater and marine life) and terrestrial i.e. mammals, insects, reptiles, and birds. Wildlife photography is most effective if it can be seen as a work of art the best pieces enticingly invite viewers to study the image subject intently and manage to create an indelible memory of the same in their minds.

By its nature, wildlife photography techniques can be considered to be artistic or scientific, or both. The artistic technique often results in works that can be displayed in wildlife books or exhibitions while the scientific approach tends to be more defined in terms of displaying the inherent characteristics of various animals. However, this manner of considering wildlife photography is not as strict per se because the ideal photo is subject to the photographers own definition indeed this is what makes wildlife photography so dynamically interesting.

Wildlife photography has come a long way in terms of the shooting equipment. Previously wildlife photographers had to work with clumsy cameras that made shooting the right pictures an equally clumsy affair. Nowadays photographers have access to superior cameras, lenses, and film. These cameras are handily portable and the lenses afford one the luxury of shooting from afar thus capturing animal life in its very essence. Digital photography has greatly transformed wildlife photography such that everyone the world over can describe a given animal in exact detail regardless of whether he/she has seen it physically or not.

For effective and successful wildlife photography the photographer has to be completely informed about his/her subjects key behaviors and locations. This ideally means that the photographers timing must be precise. Of course this timing will be informed by proper prior research on a given animal species, mostly on their biological clock that governs key behaviors like mating, breeding, and migrations. This knowledge together with patience and luck on the part of the photographer makes for successful wildlife photography.

The fact that wildlife photography is done on location in the wild calls for a combination of preparation and forethought, all with the ambition of being able to capture that unexpected opportunity thatll result in a masterpiece. Precaution is of the essence especially when dealing with reptiles, nocturnal animals, etc. A key tenet for wildlife photography is such that a photographers work must never in any way impact negatively on the subjects being focused on.
