Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary A Bird Watchers Paradise

Located along the Malabar Coast, Calicut is a culturally rich city in the Indian state of Kerala

Located in the Malappuram District, this well known bird sanctuary is around 19 kms from the city centre of Kozhikode and is approximately 7 kms away from Beypore Port. The perfect site for bird watching enthusiasts, the sanctuary is in fact spread across several islands set amidst hillocks and picturesque natural landscapes.

Also referred to as Kadalundi Nagaram by the locals, the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is home to a wide range of birds including both native and migratory species which come to the park during certain seasons. There are in fact more than 60 species of migratory birds here. As you explore the sanctuary keep a close eye out as you may get a chance to see such birds as herons, terns, gulls, Brahminy kites, greenshanks, sandplovers and turnstones. Also of note are the peafowl, kingfisher, myna and black bulbul which have made a home here as well.

A great way to spot some of these birds is by taking a boat ride and on your way you also have the chance of seeing mussels, mudskippers, crabs and even turtles closer out to sea. Rising 200 metres above sea level, the nearby hillock is a great place to enjoy stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. The period between December and April is generally considered the best time to visit the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary.
