Although the temple appears to be quite simple in its design compared to other temples in the region, Kalaram Mandir is among the largest.

Lord Rama is believed to be enshrined within a stark black idol made of stone which is why the temple is also known as the Temple of the Black Rama. Other idols which can be spotted at the temple include that of Lord Lakshmana, which are similarly dark in color and decorated with various ornamental garlands.

The construction project of the temple is said to have been one which demanded the dedicated services of more than 2000 workers who sacrificed countless hours to complete this massive project. It took an estimated 12 years to construct the temple which is approximately 70 feet tall. The very top of the dome of the temple is crowned with a gold-plated peak which glistens in the sun.
