Kansas City Chiefs Offseason Top 5 Moves

The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off the worst season in franchise history

. Usually a 2-14 season does not inspire a lot of optimism for the following year. However, this time the circumstances are a little different. The entire franchise was cleaned out and they basically started from scratch. Only the essential parts remained from last year and they are starting over. So what were the top five moves that the Chiefs made in the offseason?

1. Hiring Scott Pioli as General Manager. Bringing in Pioli was one of the most exciting things to happen to the Chiefs front office in a long time. Pioli was the three-time Executive of the Year in the NFL while building the Patriots dynasty. Some of his claims to fame are drafting Tom Brady and Matt Cassell in the later rounds of the draft. He also helped take the Patriots to three Super Bowls and a perfect regular season. Having him calling the shots will make a world of difference.

2. Acquiring Matt Cassell and Mike Vrabel in the same trade. By only giving up a single 2nd round pick, the Chiefs got a leader for their offense and their defense. While Vrabel is on the tail-end of his career, he still has a lot to offer in leadership. Cassell is the franchise quarterback that the team has needed for awhile.

3. Bringing in Todd Haley as head coach. Haley was the offensive coordinator for the most potent offense in the league last year in Arizona. He helped resurrect the Cardinals and took them all the way to the Super Bowl. He is a great offensive mind and was a hot head coaching prospect. He should be a great coach for the Chiefs.

4. Bringing in some veteran leadership. In the offseason the Chiefs acquired Mike Vrabel, Zach Thomas, Bobby Engram, Monty Beisel, and Mike Goff. These are all extremely talented players that have been around the block a few times. They know how to prepare and they know how to lead the younger guys. While they might not have many more years to play, the lessons that they can teach their teammates will go a long way.

5. Putting a new emphasis on conditioning. Last year, the Chiefs managed to lose seven games by seven points or less. The only possible explanation for this is that they were not conditioned as well as their counterparts. Most of those games, they lead in the 4th quarter. Coach Haley has put an extreme emphasis on conditioning and it has paid off big time in the offseason program. They have lost hundreds of pounds collectively as a team. The Chiefs hope that it will translate to some more wins this season.

Overall, the Chiefs have made a lot of changes in the offseason. They will look like a completely different team in 2009. Whether or not that translates into victories remains to be seen. However, they will undoubtedly be an improved team over last year. Keep an eye on them this year to compete in the AFC West.
