Kansas Darlin' Lands in Los Angeles with Feminine Oddities

Electricity is in the air in the art district of downtown Los Angeles as the art enthusiast and the agrestic alike, athirst for the vibrance and eccentricity of the art world, enjoy the sights and sounds of The Hive Gallery and Studios where The Feminine Oddities (born from the brilliant mind of artist and actress Debra Haden) combine exquisite art displays with brilliantly choreographed live performances to create a mystical ambiance that is sure to captivate any audience.

Haden's art captures everything that is truly feminine and mysterious about the female person and her timeless, "not quite, but almost" burlesque performances keep her spectators on the qui vive for her next awe inspiring event.

As Haden describes it, a "feminine oddity" is a woman that possesses multiple talents, as well as the drive, ambition, and business savvy to utilize them together to achieve one goal.

That goal, for Haden, is to intrigue her spectators with her expressive dance performances and to inspire them to purchase her acrylic paintings on display at the galleries she performs.

Her artwork is slightly reminiscent of the lingerie line she designed while studying clothing and textiles in college. She uses bright colors and somewhat asymmetrical angles, often adding odd characteristics to the lovely maidens she creates.

Her lovely paintings exhibit an almost relaxing flow of energy with its nascence around the hair of the femme depicted and its desistance in the core of the individual beholding the piece of art.

"It can take me as little as a few hours to complete a painting to as long as a month," Haden said.

"I paint them to the best of my abilities and then I'm ready to part with them," Haden said.

When this small town Kansas girl picked up her paint brush and created that first painting, she had no idea that her creative imagination would take her all the way to the streets of downtown Los Angeles, where she would join the ranks of famous artists and performers.

"I was at an art show in Venice [California] where I met Nathan Cartwright, owner of The Hive," Haden said. "I submitted some samples of my work and I began showing my paintings once a month at the gallery.

"Finally, The Hive had an opening and Nathan contacted me and told me that he wanted to bring something fresh; something new to the gallery."

Haden said it was about time a door opened for her and she didn't let her nerves get the best of her at her first performance, although she remembers how terrified she was. She was every bit the confident performer.

"This is how I do it and this is my thing," Haden said."

Now she performs several shows each month; usually theme shows that she is either throwing or participating in. She also dances in the loft above her art space at the Hive every first Saturday.

Haden designs most of her costumes and choreographs the dances alone, and depending on the theme of the show incorporates other performers input as well.

With her art displayed on the walls of the gallery behind them, Haden and her dancers; dressed in exotic, sexy, but classy costumes, enthrall audiences with their timeless renditions of art, music and entertainment.

"Things are pretty wild now," Haden admits. "This is so fun, so cool!

"I'm still in the process of building of my business, but this is where I'm supposed to be."

The Feminine Oddities perform in other gallery shows such as Cannibal Flower, various Heidi "Bluegirl" Calvert Productions, C.A.V.E. Gallery in Venice Beach, and galleries in Long Beach. Performance dates and times are listed on her website www.feminineoddities.com. Her paintings are also available through her website.

Her artwork can also be seen during the Downtown Art Walk on Gallery Row at The Hive in Los Angeles the 2nd Thursday of each month from 12 to 9 p.m., where visitors can enjoy a self-guided tour of historic downtown L.A. and experience the eclectic art the district has to offer.
