Karwa Chauth (Spelled like this also) is a very popular festival amongst married women in Northern India for their husband's life and prosperity. Mostly in the states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, some parts of Punjab and Delhi also. This festival falls during the fourth day of the Hindu moon calendar month Karthik, which falls on the descending phase of the moon, between October and November and approximately nine days before Diwali.

On Karva Chauth, women folks observe strict fasting and offer prayers for a longer life of their husband, prosperity and marital bliss. The belief is based on a story in which a pathivratha woman challenges Lord Yama The God of death and gets back her husband's life.

The story line is as follows. A crocodile catches Karva's husband when he was taking bath in river. To save her husband, Karva binds the mouth of the crocodile with rope and pleads Yama Raj to take the crocodile to hell for deed it had done to her husband. But Yama Raj refuses this. Karva then becomes furious and starts cursing Yama. Curse of a Pathivratha is very powerful which made Lord Yama shaky. Being afraid of these curses, Lord Yama reacts immediately and sends that crocodile to hell and blesses Karva and Karva's Husband with long life. Then they lived longer with a lot prosperity.

Afterwards every married women observes Karva Chauth to get the blessings of God. Of course they celebrate the Vrat every year with a great devotion. On Karva Chauth, Women observe Vrat (strict fast) and don't even consume water. On this day before dawn, the mother in law prepares a "SARGI", A delicious feast before sunrise and feeds their daughter in law. Sargi is a healthy food, helps them to fast without food all day long.

The mother gives her daughter "Baya" which contains items like fruits, shringar and goodies like sari jewellery etc to be given to her Mother in law. This day the women folks dress up like a bride and apply mehandi to celebrate this festival. The women folk gather together at one place, prepare a mandap for the puja. This corner is decorated nicely with flowers and rangoli and an Image of Mata Gauri is placed.
