Keep An Eye On Safety With Paintball Gear

Maintaining masks and guns and abiding by common sense guidelines ensures safety for all players.

Paintball is one of the safer extreme sports when it comes to reported injuries. This is made possible by state-of-the art equipment now available for athletes. By wearing recommended gear and maintaining it regularly, paintball players can stay safe and have fun at the same time.

Paint Gun Precautions

For beginners, one of the most daunting safety issues is proper use of the paintball marker, also known as the gun. Remember, it is always loaded. Point the gun barrel toward the ground and keep fingers away from the trigger when not needed. Keep a barrel sock on whenever the marker is not in use. Even when the bottle has been removed, a paint marker can still have air in it, so the gun is still loaded.

Don't joke around about shooting someone up close when players are gathering before a game. It's not funny. Do not tolerate horseplay from others, either.

If a paint gun feels like it is not firing properly, always take it to an expert or professional for service. This is not a do-it-yourself project. Although used for sport, it is a real weapon.

Face Protection

Perhaps the most important pieces of safety gear are masks or goggles. They should be worn at all times when paintball guns are present, particularly when socks have been removed. While great emphasis is placed on the eyes, receiving paint splatter through the ears, nose and mouth also represent health concerns.

Having and wearing paintball masks is not enough. They must be maintained in order to provide proper protection. Replace goggles or lenses every six months when playing regularly. Should they become cracked or significantly scratched, they must be replaced.

Take the time to clean lenses. Wipe off the excess first with a microfiber towel, then use water for additional paint removal. Apply a special cleaner for eliminating paint residue. Oil from the markers can leave a film, deteriorating the view and making masks and goggles deteriorate sooner. Using special acrylic cleaner prevents scratching and leaves a clean surface for maximum visibility.

Check goggle straps regularly for wear. Interesting designs can mask the presence of fraying, so be sure to look up close and feel the fabric with bare fingers. Check the places where the clips attach. Keep safety gear clear of extreme heat and cold when not in use. Helmets and goggles can crack or melt when left in a car outside.

Wear masks and goggles specially designed for paintball. While others may look acceptable, they may allow leaks or break under pressure. Since the eyes can be easily damaged by projectiles or splattering paint, it is crucial to wear protective gear that can withstand the rigors of the sport.
